The Changing Face of Fitness?

By Jeff Harrison

Flip on the TV and there’s no getting around it: the shape of the economy; the rising gas prices; the number of housing foreclosures; etc.  What they neglect to report which is just as big (no pun intended) a news story is the shape of our society, the rising obesity levels and the corresponding rise in health care costs.  Since the aerobics boom of the early eighties, there are more health clubs (18,000 +), more weight loss centers, more dietary programs, more available ”diet” food choices, more dietary supplements, and more advances in health and wellness than ever in our history.  Yet, as a nation we are more unfit and unhealthy than ever and just as with the price of gas, it doesn’t show any signs of improving quickly.  What gives?

The Wrong Perception

Aside from society understanding that exercise is good for us, exercising, or working out, has for many years been aggressively marketed primarily as a way of trying to get that “beach body” and to look good. While there’s certainly nothing wrong with that, all too often it becomes the only reason why people exercise and when they don’t get the body or drop the pounds they want, they stop.  Technical machinery, fancy gadgets, and false promises all lead to a confused, misinformed, and perhaps intimidated population . The real reason to exercise goes way beyond aesthetics

The Wrong Information

The fitness industry is guilty for marketing exercise as something superficial (how to get the six pack abs, flatten your tummy, etc.). The industry is filled with gimmicks and infomercials that mislead consumers into believing that the next best thing is just a pill or fancy contraption away from giving them the physique of their dreams.  Diet programs come out every year with some special angle - give up carbs, eat cookies to lose weight, etc.  Fitness is much more than that.

The Wrong Solution

In today’s ever fast paced and financially wary society, fitness is now offered as a “low price”, “no commitment” activity that still offers no solution and just continues to misinform and give the public the wrong perception of what fitness is really all about. It’s not about equipment, the latest fad or the newest trend. It’s much more than that.

The Perfect Fit Solution

Fitness is a lifestyle. It’s about preventing illness and disease, having more energy, living a longer life, and feeling good physically, mentally, and emotionally.  It’s about moving in an otherwise sedentary lifestyle. It’s about staying as healthy as you can and minimizing the risks. It’s about taking care of the only body you’ll ever get.  Fitness is a commitment – a commitment to a healthier lifestyle augmented by exercise.  It is also bolstered by good nutrition, personal support, proper instruction, and a willingness to achieve all that you can possibly imagine. Anything else, and you’ve been fooled once again.
