PerfectFit Habits for Exercise Success

By:  Peg Calvario, Owner PHC

What did you do this summer?  It is the universal question asked by others when we return to our school and work schedules in the weeks ahead.  For many of our student members,  summer is the perfectfit time to get back into shape, lose the "freshman 15", work on flat abs,or participate in running, biking and triatholon events.  Of course these activities and intentions are shared by many PHC members alike.

In the book, Younger Next Year , author Chris Crowley states, "it’s the habit and routine of exercise that lead to success."  Chris wants you to take that amazing life skill you started building the first day you showed up for kindergarten and turned it to a new purpose.  Show up at the gym.  The key is showing up again tomorrow for the rest of your life.

PerfectFit Habits that Push Aside Excuses

1.  Working Out is Your Job.   If you are over the age of 50, exercise is no longer optional.  The choice is to exercise or get old!

2.  Fit Exercise Into Your Schedule.   You’re tired at the end of the day is not because of too much exercise.  You are tired because you do not get enough exercise.  You are mentally, emotionally and physically drained from being sedentary.

3.  Value the Quality of Your Life.  Walking through the doors exhausted each night is not living.  It’s simply surviving the only life we have.  The time spent exercising is truly a bargain - and a PHC membership is only the cost of a Dunkin Donuts coffee!

4.  Protect Your Time.  The only real issue is life is crowded with obligations and stress.  So, carve out the time to exercise, make it "protected time" and guard it against intrusion.  Rely on structure more than motivation - just like you did in those early school years.

Train like a WarriorImage

A couple weeks ago, my husband and I ventured to the Omega  (Institute for Holistic Studies), located in the woods of upstate New York for a workshop weekend featuring Dan Millman.  Dan is a former world class athlete, university coach, college professor and author.    Dan shared his simple and realistic principles and practices of a warrior spirit.  A warrior has the courage to live and can turn what one knows into what one does.  Imagine practicing the knowledge of what you know about your own personal fitness plan - how different would that plan look like from the one you are living today?

The PerfectFit Life Records to Break at any Age

By:  Peg Calvario, Owner Pottstown Health Club

Breaking records is contagious positive energy!  Whether the records are home runs, world class mountain summits, running marathons, massive weight loss or a personal health and fitness goal.  We all have records to set and break.  And we can learn so much from record breakers - Barry Bonds and Werner Berger both extraordinary individuals.

Bonds’ Record  #756

In following the baseball homerun fever of number 756 - Barry Bonds, age 43 proved that breaking Hank Aaron’s record was possible.  In a congratulatory statement to Bonds, Aaron said, "it’s a great accomplishment which required skill, longevity and determination.  My hope today is that the achievement of this record will inspire others to chase their own dreams."   What are your dreams?

Werner Berger, age 69 climbed to the top of the world.  On May 22, 2007 Berger became the oldest North American male to summit Mt. Everest.  One month later at PHC, Werner shared his personal climbing story.  Imagine the skill, longevity in physical training and the determination to make it to the top.  Listen to Werner’s Dream High interview.
